We are excited that you will be attending the full day of programming today at the Newseum. We wanted to provide a detailed-packed post to help you prepare for the big day.

Registration and breakfast will begin at 8:00 am. You need to enter the Newseum at the 6th Street entrance. We will have signage directing you to the 7th floor where you will register, enjoy a breakfast spread catered by Wolfgang Puck and meet with exhibitors (and collect swag). Don’t forget to check in on Gowalla, Facebook Places and foursquare.

We will promptly begin the program at 9:00 am with a quick video by AMP media partner — the super talented The Duke & the Duck — about the history in innovation and communication. From that point, we will dive head first into our morning keynote. We recommend you review the program and plan your itinerary in advance.

All keynote sessions, and breakfast and lunch will be held on the 7th floor. The breakout sessions will be divided into three tracks: persuasion brought to you by AOL Huffington Post Media Group, activation brought to you by Microsoft & engagement. Breakout sessions will be held on the 8th floor of the Newseum. You can familiarize yourself with the layout of the summit here: http://ampsummit.com/ampsummitlayout/

Naturally, we will have Wi-Fi at the Newseum so you’re not slowed down in sharing your experience at AMP and responding to important emails. The network username and password will be provided to you at registration and listed on table tents throughout the conference. Microsoft is hosting an attendee lounge on the 7th floor where you can make phone calls, do some work and power-up, if needed. A private speaker lounge will be located on the 8th floor.

If you’re tweeting about the summit, be sure to include the hashtag #ampsummit. Tonight we are launching the AMP Summit TweetLounge — a Twitter live-stream dedicated to the conversation happening at the conference. All tweets including #ampsummit will be featured in the live-stream on http://ampsummit.com.

Media partner Holler is providing a simple service for iPhone users for connecting around the great content, sessions and attendees at our event. Whether you want to connect during or after AMP Summit, Holler will help you stay up to date on what’s going on. You can download the application here: http://holler.com/amp.

After the last keynote talk, buses will begin to transport attendees and speakers at 5:15 pm from the Newseum to L2 Lounge in Georgetown for the AOL Huffingpost Media Group headline party.

Most importantly, come to AMP Summit with an open mind. You will meet people like you that are interested in discussing how the Internet and technology have forever changed the worlds of activism + media + policy. Share your thoughts and listen to what they have to say.

While at the conference, if you have questions please look for individuals wearing “staff” badges or tweet @AMPSummit.

We’ll see you at the Newseum.

The Challenge was a success for both AP and Gowalla by helping to drive traffic to AP’s site and to boost adoption of Gowalla on college campuses. All of this was the result of a project hatched in the hallway outside the 2010 AMP Summit.

I came to the 2010 inaugural AMP Summit with both feet firmly planted in the middle letter of the acronym: Media. I didn’t know what to expect and my main goal for attending was to broaden my digital advertising knowledge. At the time, I was working at the Associated Press running the digital marketing group and we had just launched a consumer-facing website for the AP Top 25 college football poll.

I’d been tossing around an idea to try to leverage the inherent competitiveness among college football fans and a location service as a way to drive traffic to the new site. As luck would have it, Josh Williams of Gowalla was on the opening panel.

The panel set up was very low-key and comfortable, making it easy to approach Josh and share my idea. He immediately introduced me to Andy Ellwood, Gowalla’s head of business development, and we grabbed a coffee to discuss the idea further.

It became apparent rather quickly that this fit in with their campus engagement strategy so Andy and I made plans to sync up after the Summit had finished. After some very diligent and sometimes relentless effort on both our parts, the AP Top 25/Gowalla Check-in Challenge was launched a few weeks into the season.

The Challenge was a success for both AP and Gowalla by helping to drive traffic to AP’s site and to boost adoption of Gowalla on college campuses. The Challenge and associated scholarship was won by the University of Houston whose social media team created a standalone landing page, Facebook tab and YouTube video promoting their participation. All of this was the result of a project hatched in the hallway outside the 2010 AMP Summit.

Looking forward to what comes out of the next one.

About Joe Webster: Joe Webster is a digital marketing, social media and audience engagement consultant. Prior to consulting, he served as deputy director, digital marketing for the Associated Press where he helped develop AP’s social media strategy, built product specific websites, oversaw AP’s e-mail marketing team and managed digital audience engagement through partnerships, social media and online advertising.

At the inaugural AMP Summit, we laid the foundation for the future of activism, media and politics. We also looked back at the pioneers of this revolution — people like Jonah Seiger, one of the keynote speakers and the father of online advocacy campaigns. As Jonah noted during his address, the early years of Internet activism established the role of the Web in advocacy and politics, and it led to the Internet as we know it today. Jonah played a large role in blazing the trail that all of us are traveling today.

Tonight’s Welcome Networking Expo from 5 – 7 PM will officially kick off the summit, and will give attendees the chance to meet each other and begin an important conversation — one that will continue long after the summit and inspire other important conversations.

The people-powered movement, fueled by the Internet and technology, is changing the worlds of activism, media and politics. Everyday, new technologies are emerging that strengthen this people-powered movement by giving individuals the tools they need to make their voices heard. But, as Joe Trippi said in his first AMP blog post, there is more work to be done. During this year’s inaugural summit, we’ll discuss just that, challenging traditional strategies and inspiring new thinking.

If you’re going to be there, we look forward to connecting with you, seeing your pictures and reading about your experience at the inaugural AMP Summit. Follow us on Twitter (@AMPSummit), include the hash tag #amp10 in your tweets, and post on our Facebook wall.

Let’s get started.

AOL is also sponsoring our Friday night AMP Summit Party which will take place at L2 Lounge in Georgetown. This is an event you won’t want to miss.

If you can’t make it to the entire conference, don’t miss out on these excellent networking opportunities. You can register for a networking-only pass that will give you access to all of these events here.
